First Tournament Guide

Everything you need to know before playing your first chess tournament.
How to Register for Your First Tournament
STEP 1
Create a US Chess Federation Membership
Most rated tournaments require a USCF membership. Go to the US Chess website, create an account, and purchase or renew a membership before registering for a rated tournament. Parents should save the student’s USCF ID number because it is needed for tournament registration.
STEP 2
Find a Tournament
Local tournaments are usually listed on chess registration websites, local chess club pages, or state chess association websites. Look for beginner-friendly sections such as Scholastic, K-12, U600, U800, U1000, or Unrated. Examples of tournament registration websites include ChessRegister.com, KingRegistration.com, local club websites, and state chess association calendars.
STEP 3
Choose the Right Section
Tournaments often have different sections based on age, grade, or rating. Beginners should usually choose an unrated, scholastic, or low-rated section if available. If you’re not sure, ask the tournament director before registering.
STEP 4
Register Online
Once you find a tournament, click the registration link and enter your name, school, grade, USCF ID, section, and contact information. Double-check the date, location, round times, entry fee, and refund policy before submitting payment.
STEP 5
Prepare Before the Tournament
Use this checklist to get ready: Bring a tournament chess set if required. Bring a chess clock if you have one. Know your USCF ID. Arrive early. Bring water and snacks. Review basic rules such as touch-move, checkmate, stalemate, and how to use a chess clock.
What Happens on Tournament Day

What to Do When You Arrive
Check in, find the posted pairings, locate your board number, sit on the correct side, shake hands, and wait for the round to begin.

During the Game
Follow basic tournament etiquette: The touch-move rule applies. Use one hand to move and press the clock. Do not talk during games. Raise your hand if you need help. Record moves if required. Be respectful whether you win or lose.

After the Game
Report the result, reset the board, review your game if possible, and wait for the next round’s pairings.

Common Beginner Questions
Do I need a USCF membership?
For most rated tournaments, yes. Some unrated events may not require one.
What section should I play in?
Beginners should usually choose scholastic, unrated, or the lowest rating section available. Ask the tournament director if unsure.
What is a USCF ID?
It is your membership number with the US Chess Federation. You use it when registering for rated tournaments.
What happens if I lose?
You keep playing. Most tournaments have multiple rounds, so one loss does not eliminate you.
Do I need to bring a clock?
Some tournaments provide clocks, but many expect players to bring one if possible.
Can parents watch?
Usually parents must stay outside the playing area during games, but they can help before and after rounds.
